The Apostles' Creed - the common beliefs of all Christians
1.5 minute read
The Apostle's Creed, our common beliefs.
The Apostles’ Creed is a basic, general statement of common beliefs of the Christian faith. They unite all true Christians. They declare the Trinity of God, the work of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and the universal church.
The Apostles’ Creed is 12 essential beliefs written shortly after Jesus returned to heaven. Church tradition says they were divinely inspired. By 250AD they were known throughout the Christian church. By the late-300s they were called the “Apostle’s Creed.”
The need for a Creed
The literacy rate in Jesus time was less than 3%. People lived and learned through listening, remembering and memorizing.
These quick statements of belief were easy to remember and memorize. Anyone could understand Jesus’ message. They could take anywhere in their mind and then teach and preach it from memory.
Each point is like a chapter title in a book, but just reading chapter titles isn’t enough. Each chapter must be read and understood. This strengthens our faith and helps explain it to others.
Let's grow in faith
The next sections are brief explanations of the Apostles’ Creed. They are the basic historical and traditional teachings of all church denominations.
